The reputation system is a system to assess users of the community. You don't assess the user him/herself but rather his contributions to the community. (e.g. posts, guestbook entries, pictures) In this way you can express how useful or helpful contributions of the rated user are. Each user earns his reputation in the community through the reputation system.
